COVID 19 and sport project

Project Leaders: Dr Dodo and Prof L. Ntombana

Research title: Evaluation of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) to Covid-19 Pandemic in South Africa: A Case of Sports Administration and Management in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape

Unfortunately, Dr Dodo had health challenges in 2021 and could not meet his deliverable. However, he was able to co-author two papers in an accredited journal.

 

Masters Student/Intern: Oyisa Sondlo

MA title: Community Participation in selected Public Schools of Komani, Eastern Cape

Supervisor: Dr Denver Davids

Oyisa Sondlo has already submitted a final draft and will be handing in for April 2023 Graduation

 

COVID 19 and disaster management

Project Leaders: Dr F. Sibanda and Prof L. Ntombana

Research title: Strengthening the Eastern Cape government’s approach to disaster (risk) management.

 

Dr Sibanda’s work has been very impressive and he has played an active role in the RMC as member of leadership team. Dr Sibanda co-supervised one PhD and one master’s who are both likely to graduate in April 2023. He is still co-supervising another PhD and another Masters.  Further that, co-published 3 book chapters and co-published 4 journal articles. He has 3 more papers that are awaiting publication. We have made another application to the research office for Dr Sibanda to be offered another postdoctoral fellowship on a research topic related to the legacy and political history of Dr Raymond Mhlaba and we will know the outcome by the end of November 2022.

MA title: The livelihoods of informal sector workers under COVID 19 restrictions: A case study of Duncan Village in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

The Raymond Mhlaba Legacy Project

2021 Project – Project Leaders: Prof L. Ntombana and Mr O. Mtimka

As already noted, a proposal for affording another postdoctoral fellowship on research related to the legacy of Dr Raymond Mhlaba has been submitted for Dr Sibanda and the outcome will be known at the end of November 2023.

MA title: The role of Mphakamisi Raymond Mhlaba in the trajectories of Port Elizabeth trade union movement: A political historical analysis.

Book project

Project team: Prof Mcebisi Ndletyana, Prof Luvuyo Ntombana Dr Thandeka Mufamadi

The Centre has been requested by the Raymond and Dideka Mahlaba Foundation to revise Raymond Mhlaba book entitled, Raymond Mhlaba Memoirs published by HSRC. The book project is still in the process and will be published in 2023.

 

 

School project

Project leaders: Dr N Maphazi and Prof L Ntombana

The Boundary Primary School has agreed to change its name to Raymond Mhlaba Primary School. The school is situated KwaNondolo at the village where Mhlaba was born. During his time as premier Mhlaba also adopted the school and supported them. The Humanities Dean Prof Maseko has indicated her wish to have the university adopt the school. All key stakeholders have been met and agreed on this project, what is left now is the approval of the Department of Education.

MA title: Exploration of student activism in the South African higher education following the Fees Must Fall Campaign: The Case of Nelson Mandela University

This kind of project needs to be explored with student governance directorate

 

Internship/bursary opportunities

The RMC has appointed 4 Masters interns who are registered at Mandela University within the Faculty of Humanities for a period of two years beginning in January 2021. This is a very competitive programme and as result, 4 suitable candidates were appointed. The focus is more on disciplines such as Business administration, History, Politics, Sociology and Anthropology. The internship thesis titles are linked to current main research themes within the RMC. The candidates are co-supervised with other Faculty members together with the Postdoctoral Fellows. In addition to their studies, the interns play part in facilitating various projects within the Centre as part of their experiential learning.
